Color Doppler of the blood vessels of the head, more specifically of the brain (transcranial color Doppler) is a non-invasive, harmless and painless ultrasound method for the examination of arterial and venous blood vessels of the brain and blood flow through them. The review takes about 30 minutes.
• In order to test blood flow, the appearance of the wall of blood vessels and other characteristics of blood vessels.
• In patients with suspected narrowing (stenosis), obstruction (occlusion), or dilation (aneurysm) of the blood vessels.
• The doctor places a special gel on the surface of the ultrasound probe. A probe is a small plastic device that sends and receives ultrasonic waves. The gel has the role of improving the conductivity of ultrasonic waves and eliminating air between the skin and the probe.
• The probe is placed on both the temporal lobe, then on both eyes and the occipital region of the head in order to view (visualize) the blood vessels of the brain and the flow in them.
The examination is not uncomfortable and carries no risk.
• No special preparation is required for this examination.
• Do not smoke for at least 30 minutes before screening because nicotine from cigarettes (or other products) causes the blood vessels to narrow, which may affect the test results.
