Electroencephalography – EEG

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a method by which the electrical activity of the brain is recorded using electrodes placed on the surface of the head. An electroencephalograph is a graphical representation of the electrical activity of the brain obtained by this imaging and which the physician interprets and draws certain conclusions. Recording takes 20-40 minutes.

INDICATIONS / WHY IS IT WORKING?

• To detect epilepsy and monitor the effects of treatment for the disease.
• As an auxiliary diagnostic method for detecting diseases such as brain tumor, inflammation of the brain tissue (encephalitis), senility (dementia).
• To determine brain tissue damage after brain injury and after stroke.
• Monitoring of brain activity in coma patients, determination of brain death.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

• Recording is performed by placing a special cap on which the electrodes are placed or the individual electrodes are applied to the surface of the head.
• Recording is performed in a lying or sitting position with your eyes closed, in a comfortable position. You may need to open or close your eyes or breathe deeply while recording. Blinking light is applied at the end of the recording.
• In the course of epilepsy testing, certain medicines are sometimes administered during or before imaging to detect changes in the brain’s electrical activity when administered.

POTENTIAL RISKS

• EEG recording is completely painless.
• There is a risk of provoking an epileptic seizure when performing this examination in patients with epilepsy. Should this adverse event occur, Tesla Medical’s team is always ready to successfully treat the patient.

PREPARATION

• Have a light meal.
• Keep your hair clean for imaging, so it is recommended that you wash it the day before or on the day of testing (do not use hair grease preparations such as balm or gel).
• Avoid consuming caffeinated beverages because they may affect the test results.
• Take your regular therapy unless your doctor emphasizes that you skip taking certain medicines before this test.

AFTER THE REVIEW

• If you have not taken a sedative before the test, you can immediately return to your normal activities.
• If you have taken a tranquilizer before the test, it is recommended that you rest for several hours after the test. It is not recommended to operate a motor vehicle that day.
