Botulinum toxin, Botox (BOTOX®) used for cosmetic purposes is a purified, stabilized, highly diluted protein produced by the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The movements of the muscles in the face create wrinkles on the skin; when injections of small amounts of Botox are applied under the skin, this causes relaxation of the muscle involved in the formation of dynamic wrinkles (when we laugh, get angry or worried).
Botox® injections are most commonly used to smooth and remove the wrinkles of the upper third of the face, on the forehead, around the eyes, between the eyebrows. The first results are visible after 2 days, and the full effect is observed 10-14 days after treatment. The effects achieved are transient, lasting 3 to 4 months.
In addition to correcting wrinkles on the face with Botox® injections, increased armpit sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis) can be alleviated, reduced or eliminated. The effects achieved last for 3 to 4 months.
